The Texas 85th Legislative Session
Dion White, Center for Life Resources
AAIDD Texas Chapter Treasurer
The 85th Texas Legislative Session will be closing later this month on May 29th. As the session ends there are still some very important items to consider specific to IDD services in Texas. One item of high interest revolves around HCS and TxHmL CFC rates. To contain some cost at the State level there has been a budget reduction of the HCS and TxHmL CFC rates by 21%. If these rate cuts happen it would have a negative impact on providers throughout the State. It could lead to agencies reducing wages for staff which would lead to higher turnover. It is imperative that quality staff are hired and retained to insure good services are being provided along with continuity of care. The State needs viable rates to attract and retain good staff to work in this field. It is not too late to contact your local State Representative and/or Senator and urge them to consider not reducing these rates for Texans receiving IDD services. By keeping the rates as they are we would help insure people are receiving a higher level of care. I would recommend you contact your State lawmaker quickly since there is only a few weeks left to make any impact.
