Convention Report

Charlotte M. Kimmel, Ph.D.
AAIDD Texas Chapter Convention Committee Chair

The Convention planning is about over, and it is time for you to register for the Annual Convention which is being held this year on July 23-26 in beautiful Corpus Christi, Texas.  We are looking forward to seeing you there at the beautiful Omni Hotel overlooking the seawall and the Corpus Christi Bay!  What a great place to have a conference! Register early and reserve a room as we expect a sell out of the special room rates.  You still have time to participate in the conference in a variety of ways in addition to attending sessions, you might nominate a colleague or one of your employees for an award, there is also still time to become a sponsor, and you can always invite one of your staff or colleagues to attend and learn about treatment options, legislative changes, or how to be a better service provider.

This conference is sure to have sessions that will be of interest to you whether you are a Direct Support Provider, administrator, consumer, family member, or professional.  Review the program and decide which sessions you don’t want to miss.  We are very pleased to welcome as our Keynote Speaker – Dr. Karyn Harvey, who has worked in the field of intellectual disabilities for over 30 years providing counseling for individuals with disabilities.  She has written two books, as well as numerous articles, on therapeutic interventions for individuals with IDD. She is a nationally recognized expert on Trauma Informed Interventions. Dr. Harvey will also be providing a breakout session after her keynote address. You will not want to miss this opportunity to obtain knowledge from this renown and dynamic expert in the field!

Stipends for self-advocates are being offered through the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities and Continuing Education Credit is available for many sessions. We are working with the Texas Psychological Association to provide Professional Development Hours for Psychologists, Social Workers, and Licensed Professional Counselors.

The exhibit area is always a central meeting place during the convention as you can find refreshments, information and goodies from the exhibitors, drawings for prizes, and the silent auction. It is always interesting to check out the silent auction for gifts or a special item for your home or office.  The exhibit area provides many networking opportunities with former or current colleagues and an opportunity to make new contacts with others in your field.

There will be many informative sessions during the week and don’t forget to attend the last session on Friday which will provide an update of legislative changes that may impact the services you provide. This session is always well attended as representatives from HHSC, major organizations, and advocacy groups will offer updates on changes and developments in the field.

The annual AAIDD Convention is an opportunity for everyone who attends anyone to learn, meet new colleagues, and share experiences. Also take time to enjoy the Corpus Christi area and this beautiful hotel and setting!  Register early and reserve your hotel room now! We look forward to seeing you in Corpus at this exciting convention!
