Legislative Report

Dion White, Secretary, AAIDD Texas Chapter

The upcoming legislative session in Texas promises to be replete with initiatives from various segments of the state’s infrastructure, particularly in the behavioral health sector. A growing concern that has persisted for several years, affecting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), is the need for legislative action. As the legislative session draws near, two fundamental priorities that should be the focus of every legislator are:

  1. Interest List Reduction: To ensure timely and appropriate delivery of long-term services and supports, there is an urgent need to reduce the number of individuals waiting for services. Currently, individuals can remain on the interest list for extended periods, hindering timely access to essential care.

  2. Direct Care Worker Wage Increase: The current wage for direct care workers is insufficient to sustain a viable and dependable system of care. Many providers advocate for an hourly wage increase to $17, which is essential to compete with other businesses that consistently offer higher wages.  This service is crucial for fellow Texans and should be increased this session.

Stakeholders across the state are strongly encouraged to contact their local representatives and emphasize the vital nature of these services and the current challenges faced due to funding shortages. Personal anecdotes and consistent messaging are crucial in conveying the urgency of the situation. It is important to refrain from limiting contact to a single instance and to follow up consistently, including during the legislative session.
